Hebrews 4:14-5:6

Greater Then Aaron the High Priest

(4:14-16) A Superior Title

Aaron was a “high priest”, but Jesus is the Great High Priest.
“Son of God”
“Savior”
He is enthroned upon “the throne of grace”

He ministers mercy and grace.

He ministers in the heavenly tabernacle on behalf of believers

(5:1, 4-6) Superior Ordination

No man could appoint himself priest, let alone as high priest.

Jesus is both sacrifice and the High Priest who ministers to God’s people on the basis of His once-for-all offering on the cross.

(Psalm 2:7) Not a birth in Bethlehem but resurrection in the garden. He was begotten into a glorious new life in His resurrection.

Christ belongs to a different priestly order; that of Melchizedek (translation: king of righteousness) the king of Salem (translation: peace)

Jesus is both priest and king.

Hebrews 5:2-10

5:2, 7-8 A Superior Sympathy

:2 The Aaronic high priest; "he can deal gently....."

How and why?

Beset with weakness?

:7-8 Jesus; "In the days of His flesh"
"prayers, supplications with loud crying and tears"

If He was crucified, how was He "heard" when crying to the "One able to save Him from death"?

How can the Son of God learn obedience?

5:3, 9-10 A Superior Sacrifice

:3The Aaronic high priest; "...for the people, so also for himself."

The high priest was required to offer a sacrifice for himself first before he could offer a sacrifice for the nation.

:9 Jesus; "And having been made perfect,........"

Perfect here means complete. Jesus is the source of complete salvation to those who obey Him.

What is the difference between covering and cleansing sin?

(:10) "being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek."

We'll be looking into this in a later chapter.
